Importing as Repeating Fields
Importing as Repeating Fields
This guide explains how to import data into an RPM form that contains repeating fields but currently has no data. Following these steps allows you to create entirely new sets of repeating fields rather than modifying existing ones.
Key Rules & Prerequisites
Before starting your import, ensure your source document aligns with these fundamental logical requirements:
- Form Set Column Requirement: You must add a specific column named Form Set to your Excel spreadsheet or include it in an RPM Custom View under the Info section.
- Action Command Value: To create new repeating fields, set the value in the Form Set column to add. This value is strictly case-sensitive and must be written in all lowercase letters.
- Form Number Requirement: The Number column must contain an explicit value. You cannot leave the Number column blank to auto-generate form numbers while simultaneously importing data into repeating fields.
Step-by-Step Import Execution
The process uses the standard RPM importing wizard layout. Follow these steps to map and structure your data template:
- Prepare the Data Template: Create your spreadsheet columns using the exact system names. For example, use Number, Form Set, Owner, and the exact name of your repeating text field (e.g., Customer Name).
- Define Row Actions: For every unique row of repeating data you intend to add to a single form, repeat the target form number in the Number column and write add in the Form Set column.
- Run the Import Wizard: Navigate through the standard RPM import process to upload your completed Excel document.
Best Practices
Once the import completes, navigate to the designated form number within RPM to verify the structural layout. Each row marked with the add command will display as an independently populated repeating field block inside that specific form.
